Mannitol Salt Agar is used in the identification of S. auerus and other gram-
positive bacteria.

Growth Characteristics:
Mannitol salt agar is both a selective and differential agar. Mannitol salt
agar is inhibitory to most gram-negative bacteria, and is indicative of
mannitol fermentation. It is selective because it contains 7.5% sodium
chloride, which inhibits  most bacteria, such as
E. coli, from growing. It is
also differential, in that mannitol-fermenting bacteria, such as
S.auerues
will turn the agar yellow, while bacteria that cannot ferment mannitol will not
produce a color change.
